Az. Agricola Luigi Pira

Piedmont, Italy

Chiara Boschis has an extraordinary tale to tell. In a region where female winemakers are exceedingly rare, she has crafted a remarkable collection of wines that many aspire to, solidifying her position as a respected member of the renowned Barolo Boys group.

The E Pira e Figli estate had been handed down from father to son for generations, until the late 1980s when Luigi Pira passed away. At that moment, his sisters felt they could no longer maintain the estate. In their hopes of preserving tradition, they sold the estate to Chiara Boschis, a long-time family friend of the Piras.

Today, Chiara manages eleven hectares of vineyards in the communes of Barolo, Serralunga, and Monforte d’Alba. She holds the distinction of being the first female winemaker in the Langhe region, an achievement she worked tirelessly to attain in the 1990s. Her journey necessitated unwavering confidence, determination, patience, and charm. For two decades, she single-handedly ran the estate, consistently producing outstanding, highly acclaimed, and age-worthy wines. In 2010, her brother Giorgio, his wife Daniella, and their three daughters joined Chiara at E. Pira. This not only eased the workload but also ensured a new generation of female successors. Beatrice, Elena, and Vittoria Boschis, Giorgio and Daniella’s daughters, all contribute to the winery alongside Chiara.

Chiara’s estate was the first in Cannubi to embrace organic farming, and in recent years, she has tirelessly worked to persuade other growers in the district to adopt organic practices as well.
