The history of Bodega Akutain begins in the early 1970s with its founder, Juan Peñagaricano Akutain, who owned a small family property. He established strong connections with the families behind some of the most renowned traditional wineries in the Rioja region, such as CVNE and La Rioja Alta.
After spending many years exploring various cellars, studying the local vineyard techniques, and enjoying every bottle of Rioja wine he could find (all while diligently saving his earnings), Akutain was prepared to establish his own vineyards.
He dedicated several years to searching for the perfect location, and in 1975, he discovered his ideal property just to the west of the village of Haro, which is considered the heart of the Rioja region.
