Domaine Charton has been tending to vineyards in Burgundy’s Mercurey region since 1941. These vineyards, with grapevines ranging from 15 to 100 years old, offer a rich tapestry of diverse and distinctive discoveries. The red wines are crafted from Pinot Noir grapes, while the white wines are born from Chardonnay.
The estate tends to 11.5 hectares of land in the esteemed terroirs of the Mercurey appellation, nestled in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise. Mercurey boasts 32 parcels designated as Premier Cru, renowned for their unique soil composition and wines that brim with vibrant fruit characteristics.
At Domaine Charton, they prioritize maintaining a harmonious balance among various life forms to sustain a thriving biological ecosystem within the soil. Throughout the year, the vineyard soils are meticulously tended to, receiving at least seven rounds of care to encourage root development, delving deep into the earth.
During pruning, they retain only 5 or 6 buds per vine, deliberately limiting yields to allow the grapes to reach optimal maturity. The grapes are handpicked with utmost care, transported in small batches to the cellar, where they undergo a rigorous sorting process to ensure only the healthiest fruit is used.
Minimal intervention is favored during maceration, which lasts around twenty days. They exclusively employ wild yeasts naturally found on the grape berries. All their wines mature in barrels, with 30% of them being new, for a duration of 8 to 10 months. A close partnership with a local cooperage ensures that the barrels are perfectly tailored to complement the structure of their wines. Ultimately, every bottle of wine is meticulously crafted and bottled on the estate.
