Chassagne-Montrachet boasts some of the world’s most accomplished winemaking families, and among them, the Morey family stands as one of the most significant, having been rooted in the village since 1643.

Thomas Morey’s journey in winemaking began under the tutelage of his grandfather, Albert, followed by his father, Bernard. Eventually, in preparation for the 2007 vintage, Thomas and his brother Vincent divided their share of the family vineyards. This division left Thomas with nine hectares of vineyards, which he knows intimately. These vineyards are primarily located in Chassagne but also include parcels in Beaune, Puligny, Santenay, and Saint-Aubin.

Thomas Morey’s winemaking style is marked by precision and a genuine expression of terroir, all while preserving the robust character of Chassagne-Montrachet. He produces six distinct Premier Crus from the village, each possessing its own unique personality. The white wines undergo fermentation and aging for a minimum of twelve months in oak barrels, while the red wines undergo a relatively gentle vinification process, characterized by warm fermentation temperatures and limited punching down. This approach ensures a supple texture and prevents excessive extraction. The wines spend twelve months in oak, with 50% of the barrels being new, before they are bottled.

Thomas is a strong advocate for meticulous vineyard work, employing rigorous pruning methods to keep yields low and eliminate the need for a ‘green harvest.’ His reputation as one of Burgundy’s most diligent and talented viticulturalists has even led to him being entrusted with the care of vines in the Le Montrachet Grand Cru for Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
