Tenuta di Fessina

Sicily, Italy

Tenuta di Fessina, founded in 2007 by Silvia Maestrelli, hailing from a prominent Florentine entrepreneurial family, and her husband and partner Roberto Silva, stands as one of the key contributors breathing new life into the world of winemaking on the slopes of Mount Etna.

Their winemaking vision, coupled with the exceptional technical expertise of their consultants and collaborators, including Jacopo Maniaci, the CEO, and Benedetto Alessandro, oenologist and agronomist, has enabled them to establish one of the most renowned and distinguished wineries in the Etna region. It serves as an ideal representative of the evolving Sicilian viticultural landscape on the global stage.

From a winemaking perspective, Mount Etna reveals itself as a crescent-shaped expanse of vineyards, spanning from the northern municipality of Randazzo to the southern reaches of S. Maria Licodia. The two sides boast distinct characteristics and climates. The northern side, with its cooler climate and frequent winds, experiences substantial temperature fluctuations and snowfall. Here, local grape varieties like Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, and the rare Minnella variety thrive, crafting exceptional red wines.

Conversely, the southern quadrants bask in sunnier conditions, proximity to the sea, and more pronounced rainfall. This environment is ideal for white grape varieties, particularly Carricante, which develop a distinctive minerality and roundness. This complements their inherent structural acidity, ensuring that the wines have a long and delightful aging potential.
