Walter Hansel

California, USA

Walter Hansel, a lifelong wine enthusiast, had the foresight to plant the original 250 vines on his estate in 1978. Today, his son Stephen continues his father’s legacy, dedicated to crafting exceptional Burgundian-style Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley.

The winery exclusively utilizes natural yeast during the fermentation process, keeping fining and filtration to a minimum. For the Chardonnays, the grapes are whole cluster fermented and gently pressed to extract the juice. The choice of cooperage varies from year to year and from cuvée to cuvée, but none of the wine undergoes aging in entirely new oak barrels. Instead, one and two-year-old barrels are consistently used.
